Workshop with Dan Mackerman and the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota
Sunday, June 4, 2023 • 1400 4th Street, Holdingford, Minnesota 56340 • Make Your Own Cigar Box Pochade
Dan Mackerman, MFA, an award winning pastel and oil painter and popular instructor at White Bear Center for the Arts, will explain and demonstrate how to make an ultra-light, portable pochade out of a cigar box. These tiny field-sketching boxes have the advantage of adaptability to different media. Dan will teach about the use of these boxes to create a notan, or color value sketch, that can be used in the studio or in the field to become a more confident plein air painter and to use field studies for enlarged paintings in the studio.
All participants are invited to make a cigar box pochade during the workshop. Some cigar boxes and tools will be provided as examples and for students to choose from. A complete materials list will be emailed to participants.
Art in Motion has an outdoor, sheltered area with picnic tables and and indoor classroom in case of inclement weather. After or during the workshop, we can have lunch in Boho Cafe on site, then head out to paint along the Lake Wobegon Trail. This is an excellent opportunity to bring your bike (and trailer if you have one) to explore the scenic paved trail.
Camping on-site in a tent or vehicle is allowed from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. Bathroom facilities in the building will remain open overnight for campers. Please inform the organizer, Allison Eklund, if you intend to camp so that we can give Art in Motion advance notice of campers and detailed contact and building access info.
