Roots: a Homecoming

Dates: August 11th to September 20th.

About Roots:

"Roots," installed in the Art in Motion Gallery on August 10th, is an homage to the creativity artistic flavor grown from the topsoil of Holdingford. It is a tribute to this place, the memories and interpersonal connections that fertilize the land, and the creative productions that came from it. As a Homecoming exhibition, “Roots” relates to the homecoming journey of Art in Motion’s founder, Greg Konsor, by exhibiting artists with a similar story and connection to Holdingford. This exhibit was also accompanied by a 1942 John Deere B tractor. The tractor was restored and raffled by the Holdingforf FFA alumni. The John Deere in the Art Gallery conceptually connected to the farming culture of Holdingford as well as the soil itself that nurtured the Exhibiting Artists and the clay of the featured artist, Mark Skudlarek’s pottery. Mark Skudlarek, the featured artist, grew up on a farm near Holdingford and studied at St. Johns University. He then went on to found “Cambridge Wood-Fired Pottery” in Cambridge, Wisconsin where he now lives and makes. Skudlarek arrived at Art in Motion in August with his car weighted down with large planters, jars, functional plates, bowls, and mugs, and his bicycle (Holdingford is on the Wobegon Trail after all). On September 19th, he returned to demonstrate how he throws two large clay planters for visitors to Art in Motion to observe and learn. Folks gathered around Mark and his pottery wheel in the bright, warm, September sun mesmerized by the large pots spinning around and around manipulated by Mark’s expert hands. That afternoon, Mark presented an artist talk describing his upbringing and creative influences in Holdingford.
