The Butterfly Effect June 6th- July 19th, 2021

Celebrating the big changes made through small artistic actions.

The flap of a butterfly’s wing can start a tsunami across the world. This curated exhibition features artists from Central Minnesota and beyond whose artwork and life’s work address change-making and influence in great and small ways. The motif of the butterfly repeats itself through the gallery as an icon for the beauty of metamorphosis as well as to monumentalize this small but critical species in our ecosystem.

This curated exhibition explores Art in Motion's message for the 2021 season, Metamorphosis, inspired by the Monarch Butterfly represented in the large-scale mosaic by Laura Ruprecht (Laura Liz Mosaic Biz). Imagery in this 2-year mosaic project highlights native pollinator plants and pollinating insects to inspire concern and care for these critical species in our ecosystem. Ruprecht completed the first mosaic in March of 2021 featuring the Monarch butterfly and native flowers.

Catch Butterflies: Release Change

Visitors to the gallery were prompted to write an actionable step to create change on a butterfly and hang it u in the net in the window. Other guests could then read the actionable steps and become inspired to take these steps in their lives. This exhibit was about how a small action can contribute to big change. In our lives there are small steps and changes in our daily routines that can collectively contribute to a better world, community, and life.
